Possible Ideas for Album Covers

I had these Two possible ideas to use, however i felt the images weren't up to a good strandard. The image itself didn't go with the song title, the colours didn't represent the scene i was trying to create. i also felt that the pictures wouldn't relate to the artist much therefore not making it memerable for the audience.

Problems i could have with the location

Problems I could have with the location:
Costumes being ruined during the video shooting
Any props being broken on scene
Any weather conditions
Problems with set

If it rains It could get in the way of filming because I don't own a waterproof camera, therefore the camera could get water in it and possibly break loosing the footage I have built. Therefore I would overcome this by filming on different dates, checking the weather before hand and making sure I could keep the camera dry if a situation like this did occur.

If the weather conditions are bad there is a possibility clothes would get dirtier or even broken. Therefore I will make sure that I keep pictures of the clothes during each filming to make sure that if any changes do occur to the clothes I can correct them. If needs be the clothes will be washed and I will try to replicate the look it had before, however if the clothes get ripped I will either have to buy another set of clothes or try and cover up the rip.

I'm not really using any props, but if I was I would make sure that I always have a spare so if one of them breaks I have a spare to work with and then there isn't any confusion.

Most of my filming is done outside, if the background or location changes I will alter it back. The problems I could face are, children moving branches and footprints on the tracks. However I will have pictures of before and after so I can change it if problems do occur. The main issues when filming aren’t that bad.

Script

Performer:

I will be playing the role of the main artist; I have decided to do this to make sure that the correct emotion comes over in the music video.  I am 18 years old and do a variety of street dance, I have been diverse in my different acting roles, therefore thought that I could both direct this music video and be the main role.

I will be wearing a suit jacket and chino’s this is the usual styling’s when it comes to alternative rock, this is an unusual look therefore goes quite well with the styling of the genre.

CD Design

In general when it comes to CD designs they are very basic, this is because most songs/albums are bought online through a variety of different software’s the biggest one being ITunes. The use of these companies means you don’t actually need a physical disk, you just download the songs and the album cover. However there are still a diverse amount of companies like HMV who still sell the hard copy disk, therefore I went into HMV Reading to have a look at the different designs for CD’s you can get.

What I learnt:
  • ·         They don’t really stand out
  • ·         They aren’t complex
  • ·         They have the Artists and Album name on
  • ·         They usually are a picture or some kind of design.
  • ·         The colour on them are quite basic.

This is the Kings of Leon’s album on it includes the name of the Band, Album name and a picture.

This is the You Me At Six album on it includes the name of the Band, Album name and a copy right notice.

This is the You Me At Six album on it includes the name of the Band and Album name.

As you can see I have picked 3 CD of bands that are in the same Genre as my artist, I’ve done this so that you get an idea of how basic the CD’s are. They usually are quite dark and don’t have a lot of information on, black is the main colour used for this genre because it’s unusual and is filled with emotion. For my design I would like to do something like the You Me At Six album because I think it would suit the rest of my digipak design.

Treatmeant for 'Funeral' by Band Of Horses

What’s the song about? – The songs about death and changing the bad in someone, to make them a better person (Alternative Rock)
The Video Type – I have chosen to do a Narrative based video this means it will have a Storyline

Camerawork ideas –using a go pro I’ll have several point of view shots, this will be when the artist runs through a wooded path. The go pro will also be used in the car crash scene; it will be attached to the bonnet of the car as well as on the left hand side door so you really get a feeling for what’s happening in the scene. I will have several close ups on the artist face to see the pain and anguish in the artist eyes. I will have several static cameras for when the artist runs past them, as well as some over the shoulder shots. I plan on doing several shot-reverse-shots on the family in the video, so that you can connect with the situation and the scene, of the artist dead and his family finding out, I’m hoping that this gives the audience some kind of emotional connection.

Editing ideas – One idea that I’d like to use for editing would be using a lot of eye line matches throughout the video, so for example the performer to be looking at a peace of scenery. The camera would then go from a zoom on the performers face to the scenery and then back to his face. This will be done through a variety of different quick jump cuts to the scenery and to his face, by doing this you will see the emotion in the performers face and how that connects him to the song.

Another editing idea is using lots of jump cuts, in a sort of montage format where it shows the main character is walking threw a woods. This gives of the impression that the character is lost and can’t find its way back. I have chosen to do this to build a message between the lyrics of the song as well as the visual display the audience see, to create a meaningful and emotional response for the audience.

Mise En Scene ideas – the Lighting for my video will be quite dark and gloomy as I want to set it in the evening, I’ve done this because the song is quite dark and depressing which means less light will suit the video more. I will be filming my video at home, as well as a forest located half a mile away from my house which is a dense area. Here i will do most of the filming as it sets the scene and makes the connection between the genre and the type of song being performed.

Costume ideas for my video: I would like my main character to be wearing a Blue Suit Jacket, White shirt, Black Tie, Dark Blue Chino’s, Dark Blue and Grey shoes and a Dark Brown Belt. These items of clothing are both everyday stylings and cheap to afford, I bought them from the clothing brand called H & M. As you will see from this video, I would like to make the artist stand out and look different from other music videos which, is the type of thing you would expect from an Alternative Rock genre. At one point in the music video there will be a little girl who is depicted as the artist’s sister. She will be wearing her night clothes and the Artist hoodie.

Location ideas for my video: For my video I would use lots of different locations, most of the shots/clips will take place in a forest of some sorts. Another location will be in my house, another location will be a road outside my school these are important because it sets the story and also end it.

Sound ideas – the majority of the video will just be the song at full volume meaning you won’t be able to hear the background noise on the peace of footage I’ve filmed. However, I will use a variety of sound effects to help tell the story of what is happening on the screen. For example, I will be using a car crash sound effect to keep the audience engaged as well as mobile phone ringtone this will be done to add drama to the video and create an emotional link between the audience and the video.

Blood Effect

Blood in a bucket

Every make-up artist has their favourite brand of blood, but the problem is, that pro blood is well, er, bloody expensive! Most special effects artists, who need to supply blood by the bucket, rather than the dribble, use this recipe or a modification of it. Be mindful though, it’s a messy business making blood.

Take a saucepan and add 500g of Lyle’s Golden Syrup and heat gently so as to make it more fluid. To this add half a small bottle of cochineal food colouring. Depending on the brand, you may need to add more or less, so do it in dribs and drabs. Mix a heaped teaspoon of instant coffee in a quarter cup full of boiling water until it is entirely dissolved and add to the saucepan. Stir until everything is fully mixed. Now try it out by dripping into a sink. You may need to add or subtract amounts to this formula, depending on your personal views of how screen blood should look, and also on the cochineal colour and strength. Once this mixture cools off it will become more gooey again, so add 100ml of mouthwash. Mmmm. Because this is made of food products, actors can use it in their mouths. Tastes OK too! Beware though; cochineal can stain so be careful what you let it come into contact with. Once you have made enough you can bottle it up.

The big problem with blood is that it needs to be multipurpose, for which you will need different densities. Viscous blood for dribbling down faces or bodies, thinner for splattering on walls, and even thinner for pumping through pipes (to squirt or pour from wounds). Always, and I mean ALWAYS do blood tests as you can absolutely guarantee it won’t go right in front of camera. Also, make much more than you think you need- and use it! Blood seems to disappear on camera. You might feel you have drenched you cast in the stuff, but when you get your rushes back you will be astonished and wonder where on earth it all went.

If you want some ‘fresh scab’, you can boil the blood down to a thick gluey substance which can be applied to actor’s skin for extremely convincing scabs. Be careful not to boil the mixture dry or it will solidify and burn, stinking out your kitchen.

Magazine Adverts

The way Music videos or songs are known about are through a variety of different advertisement that you can find in a variety of different music magazines, Radio stations, TV Advertisement, Posters and Concerts. Not every artist or band can afford all of these but most of them stick to advertisement in a music magazine, but depending on how big the artist or band is depends on the type of magazine they are in and the size. for example you won’t have a band that no one’s heard about before in Q magazine, because it would hurt Q's reputation, and the fact that the band or artist couldn't afford it.  Typically in a music magazine they’ll sell advertisement for either a full A4 Page or half a page of A4. This is done so that when a reader of that magazine looks through it they see the advertisement of the band or artist, band  and artist make sure that there advertisement is in a magazine which is associated with the genre there music is in. I mainly see this when looking through Q and Kerrang magazines, usually they will sell full A4 spreads in there magazines.

The typical conventions within this page are:

  • Stand out font and colours that catch the reader’s attention
  • Big writing and pictures so that the reader can't miss the advertisement
  • The Date of the album release so that the reader has a good idea of when to buy the album
  • The record label the artist or bands with
  • the Name of the Band or artist
  • the website of the Band or Artist
  • Usually include some kind of logo or background picture.

This magazine advertisement is more a mixture between alternative rock and pop hence the mention in both Q and Mojo Magazine some of the biggest music magazine out there therefore raising the status of both the name of the artist and the new album. This picture is unique in itself because it’s made up of birds which isn’t the usual convention, the page also include both the artist name the albums name and the release date. At the bottom of the page you see both the website and the recording record, if the recording record is big and well known this will also bring in a variety of listeners however it’s not that key its mainly for advertisement of the brand.

Location of Music Video

Description of the locations:

Location 1 – is a house, here there will be several different shots in a variety of different sized rooms. The Mise en scene will be different in each room and each room will have its own emotional scenes.

Location 2 – this is a dark road which has one lamppost, the artist will stand underneath the lamppost. This should create a power emotional scene where the audience feel like the artist is alone.

Location 3 – is a bridge leading up to the ridgeway, here there will be a scene with the artist sat up against the edge of the wall. This is where I want the audience to connect with the artist

Location 4 – is where the artist will be walking/running down the road.

Location 5 – this is a bridleway; the artist will both run and walk down this path

Location 6 – this scene will take place on the ridgeway on a path that has an arch made of trees.

Location 7 – this is a long country road where the car crash will happen this will take a long time to create therefore I need to make sure that the scenery around the road doesn’t change over time.
This will take place during dusk, so that it captures the emotion of the song and creates an emotional bond between teens and young adults who have the emotion feelings that their favourite artist helps deal with.

Possible ideas for Group or Artist

Possible album names:
  • ·         Past Present future
  • ·         Time traveller
  • ·         Back from the future
  • ·         Never again
  • ·         Just hold on
  • ·         A Peasants past

I needed to make sure that the album name had something to do with the main song within the album. Which my video will be based on, as the main song is about the past present and future.

Name of the main artist:
  • ·         Joshua Hamilton
  • ·         Joseph Holland
  • ·         Joseph Avery
  • ·         Joseph Bloodworth
  • ·         Joseph Rae
  • ·         Joseph Franks
  • ·         Joseph Nielson

I need a name that stands out and isn’t hard to say so people remember the name easily. One that is appealing to people and matches both the type of the artist and the genre they come under.

Band Names:
  • ·         Young only once
  • ·         Consent
  • ·         The animators
  • ·         Undiscovered
  • ·         Until #45

I then went and asked 30 random selected people to pick a Album Name, Main Artists Name and a Band Name. I had to make sure they understood my genre, which is Alternative Rock. I already had a good idea of what i wanted the main artist to be called but i needed to make sure it suited the target audience of my genre.

This is what was picked by the 30 people:
Album Name: Past Present Future
Main Artists Name: Joseph Avery
Bands Name: Undiscovered
